Driver Education School - The Instructors
All Instructors are Certified and Licensed by the Kansas Board of Education
to teach Driver Education. They have hundreds of years of Driver’s Education
Carol Harder: Ms. Harder recently retired from two excellent School
Districts. Carol taught at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School for 24
years. Ms. Harder taught Driver Education in the “after school” and “summer
programs” in the Blue Valley School District. Carol and Joe Harder opened
the Harder Performance Driving School, when closure of the state funded
program in Shawnee Mission Schools seemed imminent. At SMNW, Ms. Harder
taught full time in the Art Department, specializing in Jewelry, Photography
and Sculpture. She has taught k-12 as well as University Level. Carol
received her BA and MFA from Wichita State University. Her PhD studies were
at the University of Kansas. Carol has been a practicing Artist since 1970,
her jewelry designs have been published in several books. Carol loves to
travel the world and to photograph all her creative eye sees.
Joe Harder: Mr. Harder is the
present owner of Harder Performance Driving School. He opened the school
with Carol Harder when the Shawnee Mission School District closed the state
funded program in 2001. (Carol Harder continues to teach and to drive with
Harder Performance Driving Students)
Mr. Harder received his Certificate and License from the Kansas Board of
Education. Under Joe’s outstanding leadership, Harder Performance Driving
School has become the largest and most respected Driving School in the State
of Kansas. He enjoys outdoor sports, camping, fishing, and traveling. He
especially enjoys teaching and driving with Harder Performance students.
Joe Lawless: Mr. Lawless is certified at the National Level and has been
teaching Law Enforcement Emergency Driver Education for area Police
Departments. He has been in the Dare Program in the Shawnee Mission School
District. Mr. Lawless National Level expertize enriches our already
excellent program. Joe has one son and triplet girls. Coach Joe enjoys
sports and Coaching.
Hoecke: Cy has lived in the Blue Valley district for the past 15 years and
is a real asset in the area. Cy is a retired Sheet Metal Project
Manager/Detailer with the union for the past 30 years. He has Master
Mechanical License in Kansas, Missouri, and Louisiana. He managed and
detailed multimillion dollar jobs. He is a LEED accredited professional
which stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”. His work
at Allied Signal/Honeywell for the government had Top Security clearance for
the past ten years. Cy received his certification under the Kansas Board of
Education and joined our Driver Education Team at the beginning of 2010. He
loves football, golf and being outdoors but most of all, traveling with his
wife. He believes you should find something “nice” to do for others “every
Laughlin: Coach Jim has been a full time Blue Valley Teacher for many years.
He has been the Girls Softball Coach, Golf Coach, Baseball Coach, plus he
has coached Middle School Football and Basketball. Jim has been an
inspiration to the many young people he has worked with over the years. His
easy ability to relate is a great positive for the Harder Performance Driver
Education Team. Needless to say, Coach Jim enjoys sports and his family.
Seawood: Coach Seawood was a Driver Education, Industrial Arts Teacher,
Track and Soccer Coach in the Shawnee Mission School District for 37 years.
He retired from Blue Valley Driver Education after 18 years. Mr. Seawood
taught adult Driver Education at JCCC, graduate and undergraduate Driver
Education classes at Emporia State University. He was the head soccer coach
at SMNW when they won the 1990 Kansas State Boys Soccer Championship. He is
currently the javelin coach at Shawnee Mission East. Mr. Seawood has a BA
from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and a Master’s Degree in
Driver and Traffic Safety Center at Central Missouri State University,
Warrensburg, Mo. He enjoys traveling and sports.
